I'm continually impressed by Halo's longevity, though it was the game that let FPS multiplayer break into the console market mainstream (with a nod to Goldeneye). Not bad considering I thought the first game was a repetitive slog, especially the alien ship levels, and I'm still hung up on what it could have been given that first reveal...
It's wonderfully strange to consider how different console gaming would be if Halo launched as a third-person shooter for MacOS: if splitscreen Halo never became a dormroom fixture, would Xbox have made it past its first generation? Would we remember Reach?
Good point. I think without Halo, the Xbox would have likely flopped, or at least limped along horribly until Gears of War came along. And I wonder if GOW would have pushed multiplayer if Halo didn’t set the direction first. Meanwhile, Halo would have died on Mac.
